Week 8 Part A: How to Expand Your Reach on Instagram by Using Hashtags

How to Expand Your Reach on Instagram by Using Hashtags

Visual media is the most effective way for my business to share progress and achievements, whether it be through images or short videos. Using Instagram as a tool to deliver my company's visual media content can be very beneficial if marketed efficiently. One may use common or relatable hashtags to have their content appear under specific categories, or create new tags for marketing purposes. Analyzing how other businesses in your industry use Instagram hashtags for marketing their content can give examples of which hashtags may be trending or effective for your personal business.

Summary:
I have determined that Instagram is very effective for marketing small independent game studios. Gedaria has been able to achieve over four thousand followers in less than a year through sharing their development progress on Instagram and using relevant hashtags such as: #CzechGame, #GameDesign, and #IndieGameDev, among others. Although neither of these small game developing companies receive many comments, they do receive consistent likes on their posts, ranging from 7-11% of their total followers. These companies fortify the importance of consistent progress and posts on Instagram to maintain and continue to grow an audience or target market. Focusing on one game at a time can lead to a steady growth in audience, leading into future developments.

Summary:
These large, already established companies use Instagram in an entirely different way than the small game development companies. EA, 2K, and Bethesda have developed games for years and already established a name for themselves in the game development industry. Having released and heavily marketed successful games on multiple platforms, these companies seem to use Instagram as more of a way of maintaining a connection with a certain target market. They do not use many common or trending hashtags, rather they use hashtags of their original game titles, events, or public movements that they promote. Something I learned from these large companies is that creating live events and trailers for upcoming games and events can be effective for exciting followers and enthusiasts.

Reflection

Specific hashtags that I have written down and will use frequently on my future posts:
  • #Easter (as well as other holidays)
  • #IndieGame
  • #IndieDeveloper
  • #IndieGameDev
  • #GameDesign
  • #PixelArt
  • #Games
  • #(Name of my future games)
I learned that consistency and progress, hashtags, and having an overall theme for your page is very effective for marketing your content on Instagram. Other things I found that may be useful include reposting other users' content and creating short trailers or cinematic scenes to create excitement and anticipation for future releases.
